Karl is a PhD student in the School of English and Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph. His dissertation is titled Reproducing Spontaneity: Representing and Recording Improvised Jazz Performance in Twentieth Century American Literature and Culture. Karl also plays jazz trumpet and sings on the side.

Improvisation implies a deep connection between the personal and the communal, self and world. A “good” improviser successfully navigates musical and institutional boundaries and the desire for self-expression, pleasing not only herself but the listener as well.
