A promotional poster for the 2010 Summer Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation. The lectures and workshops focused on "Envisioning Improvisation as Social Practice." Keynote speakers were Tomie Hahn and Curtis Bahn on Gender and the body, and Bob Ostertag on Text and Media.

Improvisation implies a deep connection between the personal and the communal, self and world. A “good” improviser successfully navigates musical and institutional boundaries and the desire for self-expression, pleasing not only herself but the listener as well.
