Dates announced for Guelph ICASP Reading Group and Speaker Series

The Guelph ICASP Reading Group and ICASP Speaker Series starts Tuesday, October 13 with three short readings on improvisation. The Reading Group runs monthly during the Fall and Winter terms; subsequent dates are November 10 and December 8, 2009, and January 26, February 9, March 9, and April 6, 2010. "Faculty, members of the ICASP project, students, visiting academics, artists, community members -- all are welcome," says Dr. Rebecca Caines, the groups' facilitator. The group meets from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in room 132, MacKinnon Building.

Performance Studies international issues call for papers

PSi 16 Performing Publics (Performance Studies international annual conference) has issued a call for papers, panels, and “shifts” for its conference to be held June 9 to 13, 2010. The conference will investigate the power of performance to intervene in, reshape, and reinvigorate the public sphere at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

ICASP documentary on AIMToronto premieres -- Address correction

"ICASP SPOTLIGHT Presents: AIMToronto", a documentary film produced by Martin Eckart and Rob Wallace, premieres Sunday, Sept. 6, 8 p.m., at Somewhere There, 340 Dufferin Street (one block south of Queen, enter from Melbourne Ave.), Toronto. The screening is preceeded at 6 p.m. by a performance by Joe Sorbara's ensemble, Other Foot First, which is featured in the film. This is a pay what you wish event.

Funding supports music program for at-risk youth

At-risk and disadvantaged youth in the Notre Dame de Grace (N.D.G.) neighborhood of Montreal will soon have access to ongoing music programs in a rehearsal space stocked with instruments and equipment with weekly instruction by a leading improviser. The Improvisation, Community, and Social Practice research project, with its partners La Société des Arts Libres et Actuels (SALA) and Head and Hands, received $18,500 from the City of Montreal – Programme de partenariat culture et communité and the Quebec Ministry of Culture, Communication and the Status of Women.

Hearing-Visions-Sonores (Guelph Extension) runs to September 25

Hearing-Visions-Sonores (Guelph Extension), a multimedia exhibit featuring the graphic scores of four Guelph-area composers and nine Quebec-based composers, runs August 15-September 25, 2009 at the University of Guelph Library’s Academic Town Square.

The journal Critical Studies in Improvisation/Études critiques en improvisation has issued a call for papers for its special issues on Lex Non Scripta, Ars Non Scripta: Law, Justice and Improvisation. The deadline for submission is Dec. 15, 2009.

ICASP welcomes creative input of new partner, RENDER

Speculate, incubate, innovate, cultivate, and create are the catchwords of RENDER, ICASP’s latest partner. Based at the University of Waterloo, RENDER was established in 2006 with the goal of shifting the focus of the university’s art gallery away from a traditional public gallery model to a more innovative and relevant approach that positions art, design, critical thought, and creative research in a much broader context.

The first hour is available for streaming soon after 8 p.m. The composer, accordionist and founder of Deep Listening Institute, Oliveros joins David Garland in the studio to discuss her life as a musician, the sounds of her childhood, growing up as a teenager in 1940s Houston, Texas.

Waterman to teach at Chicago Creative Music Workshop

Please note the new title and application deadline:ICASP member Ellen Waterman joins Roscoe Mitchell, William Parker, Nicole Mitchell, Michael Zerang, and David Boykin as faculty at the Chicago Creative Music Workshop (CCMW). The intensive workshop on improvisation will be held Sept. 2-3, 2009, preceding the Chicago Jazz Festival. To be held at Columbia College, Chicago, Ill., the 2-day intensive will feature master classes, workshops, rehearsals, lectures and performances centered on creative improvisation, composition and related scholarship.

Improvisation is, simply put, being and living this very moment. No one can hide in music, and improvising in music is to be truly in this very moment and being completely yourself, with all your qualities and faults. It is probably the most honest state for a human being to be in.
