Open Ears Festival of Music & Sound, June 5-15!

The 2014 iteration of the Open Ears Festival of Music & Sound will be held from June 5th-15th!

A note from Artistic Director Gregory Oh:

"Some of you heard our first vibrations in 1998, and others may be new aficionados or curious citizens out for a stroll. Even as I welcome you, I thank this community for welcoming me to my first festival in my new position as artistic director.

There is an amazing array of possibilities this year packed into eleven days! While I was programming, I thought about the way that stories bring us together, keep us together and sometimes tear us apart. Narrative is equally essential to myths and media, love and understanding. At this year’s festival, you will find stories about those who experience adversity and even triumph over it, stories of fantastical creatures and lonely hearts, silent stories, sung stories, stories that move in and
out of sound, stories that come into being and stories that are told to us by bacteria and airwaves and etiquette books. The most abstract of stories - the buzzing of a “bzz” to the chirp of a “tsch”, and the most basic story - of going someplace and then coming back again. Of course, when you take a journey, you never come back exactly the same.

I am so glad that you have joined me for these stories. I look forward most especially to the story that we will discover together, here at the 2014 Open Ears Festival."

So one of the things that improvisation has come to mean in the context of highly technological performance is that improvisation is the last claim to the legitimate presence of a human in the performance of music.
