Mystery Cello Presentation?!

Matt Brubeck will be leading a discussion about an unusual cello recording. There will be no advance distribution of this musical offering, so bring your ears and join the improvised dialogue.

Matt Brubeck is a JUNO award -winning performer/composer specializing in improvisation on the cello. Raised on jazz and classically trained at Yale, Matt is at ease in multiple genres and has taken his cello improvisation skills into diverse musical territories. Matt’s current projects include Stretch Orchestra (with Kevin Breit and Jesse Stewart), Ugly Beauties (with Marilyn Lerner and Nick Fraser), and Brubeck Braid (with David Braid). In addition to his jazz/improvising work, Matt has had many eclectic musical adventures including working with such diverse artists as Tom Waits, Pamela Z, and Yo-Yo Ma. He currently teaches a variety of courses/ensembles at York University and Humber College.

Listening itself, an improvisative act engaged in by everyone, announces a practice of active engagement with the world, where we sift, interpret, store and forget, in parallel with action and fundamentally articulated with it ("Mobilitas Animi" 113).
