Thinking Spaces: Mystery Cello Presentation?!

Please note: Due to the passing of Dave Brubeck, the meeting of the Thinking Spaces reading group with guest presenter Matt Brubeck on Friday, December 7th has been cancelled.

Please join us for the next iteration of the Thinking Spaces Reading Group on December 7th, 2012 from 3:00 - 5:00pm in the Guelph Public Library Boardroom at 100 Norfolk Street.

Matt Brubeck will be leading a discussion about an unusual cello recording. There will be no advance distribution of this musical offering, so bring your ears and join the improvised dialogue.

Matt Brubeck is a JUNO award-winning performer/composer specializing in improvisation on the cello. Raised on jazz and classically trained at Yale, Matt is at ease in multiple genres and has taken his cello improvisation skills into diverse musical territories. Matt’s current projects include Stretch Orchestra (with Kevin Breit and Jesse Stewart), Ugly Beauties (with Marilyn Lerner and Nick Fraser), and Brubeck Braid (with David Braid). In addition to his jazz/improvising work, Matt has had many eclectic musical adventures including working with such diverse artists as Tom Waits, Pamela Z, and Yo-Yo Ma. He currently teaches a variety of courses/ensembles at York University and Humber College.

This group is open to all: community members, faculty, and students. We welcome new participants at any time throughout the year. Please join us for stimulating discussions on improvisation! Contact improv@uoguelph.ca or 519-824-4120 x53885 for more information.

We’ll all be more innovative if we participate in collaborative webs and share more openly. Creativity is always a collaboration and it’s always a form of improvisation, written large in the social world.
